ARTIST STATEMENT

My ultimate goal as a filmmaker is to inspire societal humility, betterment and healing

through the magic and power of narrative storytelling.

Our population – particularly within this country – is suffering from a pandemic of

hopelessness, divisiveness, and self-centeredness. Our greatest inhibitor is our greatest pride: our chokehold of control over our self-reliant image. Often, there is no room for our identities or conflicts to be anything more than black or white. There is no room for life’s endless mysteries, complexities, or any school of thought, emotion or nature of the world that threatens to make us feel small. Yet in this desperate habit of resisting these realities, I believe that our culture is crumbling in on itself.

As an artist, and as a person, I refuse to simply stand witness to this.

Film is a fascinating, highly psychological art form. As a mass media storytelling tool, it has an incredible and awesome power to both influence and reflect our history, philosophies, and cultural values. Utilizing this beautiful relationship, my goal is to aid in the cultural movement for a better world by changing the stories that we tell.

I aim to tell stories that reflect mercy, forgiveness and empathy. Stories that are honest about the depth and darkness of the human condition yet realistically exemplify love and hope. Stories that remind us that we are all human and therefore precious to the world. Stories that illuminate the wonder of the gift of life and confront our connected role within it.

These are the stories that I seek to tell. Stories of everyday, faulted characters that face the challenges of a broken world and witness that only through the mysterious phenomenon of love and humility can they overpower fear, ignorance and hate. It is through this mechanism of reckoning with the universal faults of our human condition that I intend to inspire peace, love and community in a world where no matter the differences that separate us, we are all – in fact – human.
